Is My Teen Using Drugs Or Alcohol?

During the teen years, young people are busy trying to figure out who they are. Part of this process involves experimenting with different clothing styles, spending more time with friends and starting to make their own lifestyle choices. At this time in a teenager’s life, it’s not entirely uncommon for them to experiment with drugs and alcohol. Unfortunately, however, they lack the experience and the maturity to fully understand the consequences of their decisions.

Who Is At Risk For Using Drugs Or Alcohol?

While it would be easy to think that using drugs or alcohol is something that happens only to teens who come from certain income levels or who live in specific areas. That is however, not the case.

Some young people will experiment with substances and either stop or use them occasionally and not experience any type of significant problems. Others will develop a substance abuse issue, which can lead to them moving on to more dangerous drugs or binge drinking. Over time, the young person can have a fully developed addiction, which can be both detrimental and dangerous for both them and those they love.

Young people particularly at risk include ones who:

  • Have low self-esteem
  • Are depressed
  • Who feel as though they don’t fit in with their peers
  • Have a family history of substance abuse/addiction

How To Lower The Risk Of Substance Abuse For Your Teen

  1. Educate yourself about the health consequences of drug and alcohol abuse. Before you can talk to your teen about drugs and alcohol, you need to know the facts. There are resources available online, from the public library or your local health clinic to help you.
  1. Talk to your teen early and often about substance abuse. Instead of having one talk, talk multiple times about drugs and alcohol and keep the doors to communication open. Let your teen know that you are available to talk anytime they need you and that you will always listen.
  1. Model good behavior in your own choices around drug and alcohol use. If you tell your teen that drug and alcohol abuse will not be tolerated in your home, but they see you abusing your own prescription medications or saying that you “need” a drink because you have had a bad day, it gives them a mixed message. Now is the time to take a good look at your own use patterns so that you can set a good example.

Choosing A Rehab Based On Programs – Not Location

If you agree that the quality and types of programs and therapies offered at a rehab facility are factors in the likelihood of long-term sobriety and relapse prevention, then extending your search for a facility beyond your immediate living area makes good sense. Limiting your search to only rehabs near you means you are closing the door to considering programs which may be a better fit, even though you or your loved one may need to travel to access them.

Addiction Treatment Programs Offered At New Beginnings Recovery Center

At New Beginnings Recovery Center, we focus on offering long-term treatment options to our clients. We believe this approach provides our clients with the best chance for long-term sobriety. To help our clients achieve this goal, we offer a number of programs and therapies:

Natural Detox Program

We offer an integrative and natural addiction detox program that utilizes our Neurotransmitter Restoration Therapy. Our unique and effective detox program uses IV and oral supplements of vitamins, amino acids and minerals to replete a recovering addict’s body. Doing this allows for a faster and more complete restoration of both neurotransmitter and nutritional functions, which helps relieve many uncomfortable drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Inpatient Program

Our 28-day Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a day treatment program with community housing. It provides clients with a highly-structured environment for the early stage of treatment, which includes group therapy, education and relapse prevention.

Outpatient Program

Our 60 or 90-day Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is available to clients who have successfully completed the PHP program. Our IOP is flexible and if you need, allows you to still go to school as well as work. Our Intensive Outpatient Program also includes group therapy and individual treatment programs, a 12-step program and more.

Mental Health Services

Psychiatric and mental health services are available to all clients in our programs. When clients come to us for detox, they automatically receive a psychiatric evaluation.

We can also provide outpatient psychiatric treatment for co-occurring disorders (mental health issues and addiction). Session frequency is based on our clients’ needs.

Integrative Medical Programs

Our integrative medical addiction treatment programs combine conventional medical therapies and alternative medicine to provide a holistic approach to treatment. By taking into account a person’s mind, body and soul, we get them on moving toward recovery quickly and completely.

Counseling

At New Beginnings Recovery Center, we have a number of mental health and substance abuse counseling programs to fit our clients’ busy schedules. Day and night groups meet five days each week. Individual counseling is offered in conjunction with our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

Alumni Programs And Aftercare

We offer both Alumni and aftercare addiction programs as well. Our Alumni program is free to join for program graduates and consists of catered, weekly meetings held on the property. The goal is to build relationships with peers, provide service opportunities, and foster a sense of belonging.

Sober Living

Program Spotlight: Integrative Medical Addiction Treatment Programs

Treating addiction involves looking at several aspects of a client’s lifestyle. Substance abuse has the potential to impact a person’s life in a number of ways. To achieve the goal of long-term sobriety, a treatment program needs to approach the disease from several fronts. The medical addiction treatment programs available here at New Beginnings Recovery Center offers help to treat the entire person.

Integrative Medical Addiction Treatment Programs-New Beginnings Center

Our approach to healing integrates clients’ body, mind and spirit. We make sure to look at the lifestyle aspects of each individual, since this is part of what determines each person’s needs when seeking help for substance abuse. Clients can benefit from both conventional and alternative therapies as part of their program.

Integrative Medical Addiction Programs

Restore Neurotransmitter Restoration Program

Our Restore Neurotransmitter Restoration Program includes providing IV treatments and oral supplements including amino acids, vitamins and minerals. The advantage of this form of treatment is that it restores nutritional and neurotransmitter function that has been damaged by ongoing drug or alcohol use. As a result, a number of the symptoms commonly associated with withdrawal from drugs and alcohol are alleviated.

The vitamins and minerals also give a boost to an individual who may not have been eating very well due to their addiction. Starting this process early gives our clients a jump start on restoring their nutritional health.

The program is individualized to suit each client’s needs. The basic oral supplementation program begins during the evaluation process to repair stomach and cellular function.

Personalized IV amino restoration treatments are administered a minimum of three times per week for three weeks. Additional weeks of treatment will be scheduled, if necessary.

Once the treatment has been completed, assessments are conducted to determine a client’s oral maintenance protocol. It includes amino acids, as well as personalized medical recommendations to lower the likelihood of a relapse.

Integrative Detox Programs

At New Beginnings Recovery, our Integrative Detox Programs combine the traditional approach to detox medicine with complementary alternative medicine therapies. This includes our Restore Neurotransmitter Restoration Program.

To support our clients who are going through detox, we of course provide nutritional support counseling. This is important, since many people who have been living with addiction have neglected this basic building block of good health.

We also offer a unique laser addiction treatment program called Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). LLLT is theorized to decrease anxiety and improve mood by increasing the brain’s “feel-good” hormones, endorphins.

Another alternative therapy we offer is visual imagery and progressive muscle relaxation techniques to help our clients get into a peaceful state of mind where they can use their own problem-solving skills to improve their lives.

Hypnotherapy is also offered, and it is also helpful for clients who are looking to achieve a peaceful frame of mind where they are free from worry and anxiety.

Struggling With Addiction And Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

Addiction & OCD-Outpatient Dual Diagnosis Treatment-NewBeginnings

Many people deal with a mental health condition such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression or anxiety. Unfortunately, many of these people either do not fully understand their condition or aren’t even aware what’s wrong with them. Many also turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to self-medicate their difficult mental health symptoms.

When someone is diagnosed with a mental health disorder and is struggling with addiction, they are considered to have a dual diagnosis.

How OCD Affects A Person’s Life

In the case of OCD, it affects a person’s brain as well as their behavior. OCD can cause severe anxiety, which leads to obsessions and compulsions that, in more severe cases, takes time away from the activities of everyday life.

Obsessions can be images, thoughts or impulses that occur repeatedly. They feel as though they are outside of a person’s control. Someone with OCD does not want these obsessions and they are not welcome. A person may feel afraid, disgusted or have a feeling as though they must do something in a specific manner as a result of their obsession.

Compulsions are repetitive behaviors that a person with OCD uses to try to counteract their obsessive thoughts, images or impulses. The person feels driven to perform these rituals.

How A Dual Diagnosis Can Occur With OCD

When OCD symptoms first start to appear, it’s possible that an affected person may not understand what these signs and feelings are. Someone who is experiencing this level of anxiety may turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to self-medicate. The chemicals are many times used to try to dull or turn off the obsessions so that they don’t have as powerful an effect on the person’s life.

Outpatient Dual Diagnosis Treatment

If you need help for obsessive-compulsive disorder and addiction but cannot take time away from work, school or family responsibilities, New Beginnings offers outpatient dual diagnosis treatment services where we effectively treat both your mental illness and the addiction concurrently. You can get effective treatment from our psychiatrists and mental health staff at a time that works with your schedule.

We can also offer other mental health services on an outpatient basis:

  • Individual therapy
  • Mental health counseling
  • Psychiatric services
