5 Things That Make Anxiety Worse And Tips To Help It

Find Calm Amidst the Chaos-Anxiety Tips-NewBeginningsRecoveryCenterEveryone feels anxious from time to time, but for some, anxiety can be both debilitating and detrimental to daily life. This kind of emotion can keep rolling once it starts, and many people tend to do things that make their anxiety symptoms worse, likely without realizing it at the time.

For those of you who are in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction, anxiety that is not dealt with appropriately can lead to decisions that can put you on a downward slope, leading to a relapse.

The good news is there are things you can do to help your anxiety and stop this train of emotion from getting away from you, but first, let’s bring to fruition five things that can actually make anxiety worse.

5 Things That Make Anxiety Worse

1. Avoiding The Situation Or Thing That Scares You

When you are anxious about something, avoiding it only gives the place, situation or person more power over you, making you feel worse. Dealing with it by taking steps to visualize a “peaceful” version of it, talking about it with a professional, realizing that “the worst possible outcomes” that you usually expect won’t and don’t happen, and facing it, can all greatly help your anxiety.

2. Looking For Reassurance

Asking other people for reassurance may feel good in the moment, but its effects don’t last for long. Insistently looking for comfort and reassurance from others rather than from yourself or from your Higher Power will keep you in a circle of uncertainty and can create problems with your self-confidence.

3. Drinking Or Using Drugs

Trying to “numb out” your anxiety with substances will only make your anxiety worse over time. Self-medicating anxiety symptoms can be a very vicious cycle. If you find yourself in this cycle, make sure to seek professional help, like our effective dual diagnosis treatment program.

4. Complaining About The Situation

Complaining about the situation may let off some steam, but it doesn’t address the underlying issues at all. It’s better to be grateful for what you do have (remember, there are people who are praying for what you have right now).

5. Hoping For A Miracle

Hope is always a good passion, but like complaining, hope without taking action does nothing to improve your situation.

Tips To Help Your Anxiety

Get Active

Who You Are-Anxiety Tips-New Beginnings Recovery CenterRegular exercise will help to relieve your anxiety and promote relaxation. The best type is aerobic exercise, so find something that will get your heart rate elevated.

Find an activity that you can enjoy three times a week for 20 minutes at a time.

Walking is a good one to start with, since it you don’t need any special equipment, but you can also dance, tackle some housework vigorously, go cycling, jogging, take the dog to the park for a peaceful walk, etc.

Get Plenty Of Sleep And Eat A Balanced Diet

When you are anxious, you may not sleep well, which can make you crave salts, sugars, fats and other unhealthy choices. Trying to eat a balanced diet of vegetables, lean protein and whole grains will help you to start feeling better physically; which is a start to whole-body health and healing.

Program Spotlight: Outpatient Opiate Detox

Until It’s Done-Outpatient Opiate Detox Program-NewBeginningsRecoveryNew Beginnings Recovery Center’s Outpatient Opiate Detox Program is available to those who are looking for a safe and more comfortable method of detox that will help them overcome the withdrawal effects of opiates.

Outpatient Detox Program

We offer a specialized outpatient program for individuals who are dependent on opiates and other types of painkillers. By choosing our outpatient program, clients can detox comfortably from prescription medications while still attending work, school or other responsibilities.

Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS)

Those who are detoxing from Suboxone® are especially prone to experiencing the symptoms of Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) (persistent problems that happen after withdrawal). During this stage, most people report similar types of experiences, characterized by these symptoms among others:

  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Depression
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Tiredness
  • Variable energy
  • Greater sensitivity to pain

At New Beginnings Recovery Center, we have refined our detox protocol so that both the acute and post acute symptoms are minimized. Suboxone® tends to effect people so that their opiate withdrawal symptoms last longer and the PAWS symptoms are more intense than with other opiates. Our Suboxone® outpatient detox has been modified to address these issues.

Ongoing Treatment Plan After Detox

Once our clients complete any of our Outpatient Opiate Detox Programs, we perform a follow-up evaluation to determine their mental state and to understand the underlying reasons for addiction. An ongoing treatment plan, customized to meet each individual’s needs, will be developed. These customized treatment plans can include holistic therapies, individual and group counseling, mental health services, nutritional support and much, much more.

To prevent relapse, we also provide real-life tools to help clients cope with cravings and stressors in the real world.

Are You Struggling With PTSD And Addiction?

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is a type of anxiety disorder that can come about after a traumatic event. If you have experienced a traumatic event in your life, your body may heal much more quickly than your mind and emotions. This process can take much longer, and for some people, through no fault of their own, find that certain sights, sounds, smells or words trigger fear memories that bring them back to the original event.

Struggling With PTSD And Addiction-NewBeginningsRecoveryCTR.comPeople with PTSD may start to avoid environments where they may encounter the “triggers” where they have experienced flashbacks, nightmares, or persistent anger guilt or shame.

Someone with this mental health condition may find it difficult to experience positive emotions or feel that they are a bad person or cannot be trusted in the aftermath of being a victim of, for example, a violent assault, sexual assault or child molestation. Accident, natural disaster or combat survivors may experience guilt that they were spared when others were not.

PTSD Facts And Statistics

  • Approximately seven or eight out of every 100 people in the United States will develop PTSD at some point during their lifetime, according to the National Center for PTSD.
  • Eight million adults have PTSD, during any given year. This number represents a small number of those who have experienced a trauma.
  • Women are more likely to develop PTSD than men. About 10 percent of women will develop it during their lifetime, compared to four percent of men.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder And Addiction

Many people with this anxiety disorder start using drugs and/or alcohol as a way to try to self-medicate. If you have been living with the symptoms of PTSD, you know how difficult they can be. Since the symptoms may not start immediately following the traumatic event, it’s possible that you did not immediately connect them to the trauma.

It’s natural to want to either minimize the disturbing symptoms or to shut them off altogether, but trying to treat yourself or self-medicate is not the best way to deal with the situation.

Don’t be ashamed that you need professional help. It takes the bigger person to realize and admit they need help.

What Are The Benefits Of Nutritional Counseling In Addiction Recovery?

At New Beginnings Recovery Center, we believe in taking a holistic approach when offering drug and alcohol addiction treatment to our clients. Addiction is a chronic disease affecting the mind, body and spirit of those it touches, and for treatment to be effective in making long-term sobriety a reality, it must be dealt with on all three fronts. All of the clients we serve have the option of adding nutrition counseling to their recovery program.

Discover the benefits of nutritional counseling, at such a vital time for those in addiction recovery.

Benefits Of Nutritional Counseling In Addiction Recovery

Nutritional Counseling In Addiction Recovery-New Beginnings Palm BeachA number of people who have been active substance abusers have neglected their diet.

Part of recovery must involve improving physical health, which in turn has a positive effect on mental and spiritual health. Nutritional counseling for drug and alcohol detox benefits the body by restoring the necessary nutrients after both short- and long-term addiction.

Our nutrition counseling program matches clients with a health and nutrition coach who helps them to develop an eating plan that reflects their preferences, any special needs and lifestyle.

The health coach can also offer advice about how to recognize and eliminate behaviors that may lead to cravings that can start the downhill slide toward a relapse.

Through the process of working with a health coach, clients learn that preparing, serving and eating food is an enjoyable experience. Choosing what to eat, making a meal plan, shopping for ingredients, chopping and preparing fruits and vegetables, and as well as the other parts of the meal are all part of daily life.

Understanding one’s nutritional needs and learning the importance of preparing simple, nutritious and wholesome meals and snacks is something that a person in recovery can take pride in once they’re home. It helps to boost self-esteem and some people find that cooking is a relaxing activity, since it takes focus, can be fun and most of all, is rewarding.

Is My Teen Using Drugs Or Alcohol?

During the teen years, young people are busy trying to figure out who they are. Part of this process involves experimenting with different clothing styles, spending more time with friends and starting to make their own lifestyle choices. At this time in a teenager’s life, it’s not entirely uncommon for them to experiment with drugs and alcohol. Unfortunately, however, they lack the experience and the maturity to fully understand the consequences of their decisions.

Who Is At Risk For Using Drugs Or Alcohol?

While it would be easy to think that using drugs or alcohol is something that happens only to teens who come from certain income levels or who live in specific areas. That is however, not the case.

Some young people will experiment with substances and either stop or use them occasionally and not experience any type of significant problems. Others will develop a substance abuse issue, which can lead to them moving on to more dangerous drugs or binge drinking. Over time, the young person can have a fully developed addiction, which can be both detrimental and dangerous for both them and those they love.

Young people particularly at risk include ones who:

  • Have low self-esteem
  • Are depressed
  • Who feel as though they don’t fit in with their peers
  • Have a family history of substance abuse/addiction

How To Lower The Risk Of Substance Abuse For Your Teen

  1. Educate yourself about the health consequences of drug and alcohol abuse. Before you can talk to your teen about drugs and alcohol, you need to know the facts. There are resources available online, from the public library or your local health clinic to help you.
  1. Talk to your teen early and often about substance abuse. Instead of having one talk, talk multiple times about drugs and alcohol and keep the doors to communication open. Let your teen know that you are available to talk anytime they need you and that you will always listen.
  1. Model good behavior in your own choices around drug and alcohol use. If you tell your teen that drug and alcohol abuse will not be tolerated in your home, but they see you abusing your own prescription medications or saying that you “need” a drink because you have had a bad day, it gives them a mixed message. Now is the time to take a good look at your own use patterns so that you can set a good example.

Choosing A Rehab Based On Programs – Not Location

If you agree that the quality and types of programs and therapies offered at a rehab facility are factors in the likelihood of long-term sobriety and relapse prevention, then extending your search for a facility beyond your immediate living area makes good sense. Limiting your search to only rehabs near you means you are closing the door to considering programs which may be a better fit, even though you or your loved one may need to travel to access them.

Begin-Choosing A Rehab Based On Programs-New Beginnings Recovery

Addiction Treatment Programs Offered At New Beginnings Recovery Center

At New Beginnings Recovery Center, we focus on offering long-term treatment options to our clients. We believe this approach provides our clients with the best chance for long-term sobriety. To help our clients achieve this goal, we offer a number of programs and therapies:

Natural Detox Program

We offer an integrative and natural addiction detox program that utilizes our Neurotransmitter Restoration Therapy. Our unique and effective detox program uses IV and oral supplements of vitamins, amino acids and minerals to replete a recovering addict’s body. Doing this allows for a faster and more complete restoration of both neurotransmitter and nutritional functions, which helps relieve many uncomfortable drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Inpatient Program

Our 28-day Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a day treatment program with community housing. It provides clients with a highly-structured environment for the early stage of treatment, which includes group therapy, education and relapse prevention.

Outpatient Program

Our 60 or 90-day Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is available to clients who have successfully completed the PHP program. Our IOP is flexible and if you need, allows you to still go to school as well as work. Our Intensive Outpatient Program also includes group therapy and individual treatment programs, a 12-step program and more.

Mental Health Services

Psychiatric and mental health services are available to all clients in our programs. When clients come to us for detox, they automatically receive a psychiatric evaluation.

We can also provide outpatient psychiatric treatment for co-occurring disorders (mental health issues and addiction). Session frequency is based on our clients’ needs.

Integrative Medical Programs

Our integrative medical addiction treatment programs combine conventional medical therapies and alternative medicine to provide a holistic approach to treatment. By taking into account a person’s mind, body and soul, we get them on moving toward recovery quickly and completely.

Program Spotlight: Integrative Medical Addiction Treatment Programs

Treating addiction involves looking at several aspects of a client’s lifestyle. Substance abuse has the potential to impact a person’s life in a number of ways. To achieve the goal of long-term sobriety, a treatment program needs to approach the disease from several fronts. The medical addiction treatment programs available here at New Beginnings Recovery Center offers help to treat the entire person.

Integrative Medical Addiction Treatment Programs-New Beginnings Center

Our approach to healing integrates clients’ body, mind and spirit. We make sure to look at the lifestyle aspects of each individual, since this is part of what determines each person’s needs when seeking help for substance abuse. Clients can benefit from both conventional and alternative therapies as part of their program.

Integrative Medical Addiction Programs

Restore Neurotransmitter Restoration Program

Our Restore Neurotransmitter Restoration Program includes providing IV treatments and oral supplements including amino acids, vitamins and minerals. The advantage of this form of treatment is that it restores nutritional and neurotransmitter function that has been damaged by ongoing drug or alcohol use. As a result, a number of the symptoms commonly associated with withdrawal from drugs and alcohol are alleviated.

The vitamins and minerals also give a boost to an individual who may not have been eating very well due to their addiction. Starting this process early gives our clients a jump start on restoring their nutritional health.

The program is individualized to suit each client’s needs. The basic oral supplementation program begins during the evaluation process to repair stomach and cellular function.

Personalized IV amino restoration treatments are administered a minimum of three times per week for three weeks. Additional weeks of treatment will be scheduled, if necessary.

Once the treatment has been completed, assessments are conducted to determine a client’s oral maintenance protocol. It includes amino acids, as well as personalized medical recommendations to lower the likelihood of a relapse.

Integrative Detox Programs

At New Beginnings Recovery, our Integrative Detox Programs combine the traditional approach to detox medicine with complementary alternative medicine therapies. This includes our Restore Neurotransmitter Restoration Program.

To support our clients who are going through detox, we of course provide nutritional support counseling. This is important, since many people who have been living with addiction have neglected this basic building block of good health.

We also offer a unique laser addiction treatment program called Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). LLLT is theorized to decrease anxiety and improve mood by increasing the brain’s “feel-good” hormones, endorphins.

Another alternative therapy we offer is visual imagery and progressive muscle relaxation techniques to help our clients get into a peaceful state of mind where they can use their own problem-solving skills to improve their lives.

Hypnotherapy is also offered, and it is also helpful for clients who are looking to achieve a peaceful frame of mind where they are free from worry and anxiety.

Struggling With Addiction And Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

Addiction & OCD-Outpatient Dual Diagnosis Treatment-NewBeginnings

Many people deal with a mental health condition such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression or anxiety. Unfortunately, many of these people either do not fully understand their condition or aren’t even aware what’s wrong with them. Many also turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to self-medicate their difficult mental health symptoms.

When someone is diagnosed with a mental health disorder and is struggling with addiction, they are considered to have a dual diagnosis.

How OCD Affects A Person’s Life

In the case of OCD, it affects a person’s brain as well as their behavior. OCD can cause severe anxiety, which leads to obsessions and compulsions that, in more severe cases, takes time away from the activities of everyday life.

Obsessions can be images, thoughts or impulses that occur repeatedly. They feel as though they are outside of a person’s control. Someone with OCD does not want these obsessions and they are not welcome. A person may feel afraid, disgusted or have a feeling as though they must do something in a specific manner as a result of their obsession.

Compulsions are repetitive behaviors that a person with OCD uses to try to counteract their obsessive thoughts, images or impulses. The person feels driven to perform these rituals.

How A Dual Diagnosis Can Occur With OCD

When OCD symptoms first start to appear, it’s possible that an affected person may not understand what these signs and feelings are. Someone who is experiencing this level of anxiety may turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to self-medicate. The chemicals are many times used to try to dull or turn off the obsessions so that they don’t have as powerful an effect on the person’s life.

Outpatient Dual Diagnosis Treatment

If you need help for obsessive-compulsive disorder and addiction but cannot take time away from work, school or family responsibilities, New Beginnings offers outpatient dual diagnosis treatment services where we effectively treat both your mental illness and the addiction concurrently. You can get effective treatment from our psychiatrists and mental health staff at a time that works with your schedule.

We can also offer other mental health services on an outpatient basis:

  • Individual therapy
  • Mental health counseling
  • Psychiatric services

What Are The Benefits Of Ongoing Drug And Alcohol Abuse Counseling?

At New Beginnings Recovery Center, drug and alcohol abuse counseling is one of our core programs. Ideally, our clients make counseling a priority on a long-term basis so that they can get the benefits of ongoing drug and alcohol abuse counseling.

Why Offer Counseling As Part Of Drug And Alcohol Treatment?

When individuals understand themselves and the nature of their addiction more clearly, they are able to make better choices. Someone who has experience emotional pain or trauma and wants to numb their feelings may have originally turned to drugs or alcohol because the substances helped them do this.

The problem with self-medicating however, is that it prevents people from properly dealing with their issues and tolerance can quickly build. There may not have been a lot of thought involved at the time; as it may have been a simple matter of cause-and-effect, which got out of their control.

Benefits Of Ongoing Drug And Alcohol Abuse Counseling-NewBeginningsIn treatment counseling, our caring and professional staff works with each individual to get them to look at the events or feelings that brought them to the point where they felt they needed to numb out and not be fully present. By understanding and observing the negative thoughts from the past and by learning to change them to more positive ones, individuals are able to adopt new behaviors in the present.

Some Benefits Of Ongoing Drug And Alcohol Abuse Counseling

There are a number of benefits to continuing counseling after the initial course of substance abuse treatment has concluded, such as:

  • It provides a source of support as our clients continue to use the coping strategies they have learned in treatment.
  • Counselors (and other participants if client is in group therapy) can provide helpful feedback when clients are facing challenging interpersonal situations.
  • Clients can continue to work on self-confidence and self-esteem issues.
  • Not all issues around negative thoughts can be solved during initial drug and alcohol treatment; our clients can address these issues during ongoing counseling as needed.
  • Counselors are available to help clients who are at risk for a relapse and help them head off the situation before a slip (or the possibility of one) becomes a full-fledged binge.
  • An important part of the work that substance abuse counselors do is to help clients learn to forgive themselves — and the other people in their lives – so that they can move forward.

Ongoing Substance Abuse Counseling Can Help You

As you can see, ongoing substance abuse counseling can benefit anyone – even if they have remained successful in their sobriety.

See how our drug and alcohol counseling programs, can help you or a loved one become even stronger in your recovery!

Why Do Individualized Drug Treatment Programs Offer The Best Chance For Success?

Individualized Drug Treatment Programs-New BeginningsTreating addiction is not like treating an illness where a physician can prescribe a course of treatment based on test results. Addiction is a chronic illness that is complicated and requires comprehensive and unique treatment.

At New Beginnings Recovery Center, we offer individualized drug treatment programs that recognize the uniqueness of each person we treat. This approach offers our clients the best chance for success and we have seen many of them move from the active stage of addiction to successful recovery using our methods.

Benefits Of A Personalized Addiction Program

The benefits of a personalized addiction treatment program are countless since as a one-size-fits-all rehab simply does not work for each and every person seeking help for addiction. Each individual has their own history, story about why they became addicted, reasons why they continue to use, issues they particularly want to address with their counselors, and treatment goals.

For this reason, clients need a personalized treatment plan that is centered around their own needs and individual goals.

At New Beginnings Recovery, we offer individual and group counseling and therapy sessions to get at the root of each individual’s addiction. We also offer other customized activities to encourage our clients to learn relaxation skills, become more physically fit and develop (or rediscover) their creativity. From this “basket” of activities, clients can choose therapies to help them work through the stressors in their lives instead of turning to drugs or alcohol. The tools learned from these programs can be applied long after a client leaves our program.

Effective For Dual Diagnosis

Not all of the clients we see are being treated solely for substance abuse issues. We also treat people who need help for mental health concerns like depression, anxiety and PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder). It’s not uncommon for people living with these conditions to use drugs and/or alcohol to self-medicate, either because they don’t know what is wrong with them or because they don’t know how to get the help they need.

Unfortunately, self-medicating can complicate any underlying mental health conditions. At New Beginnings Recovery Center, we can offer detox as well as a personalized treatment plan to fit each clients’ specific treatment needs and goals. We can help you and your loved ones recover today!
