The Signs Of Meth Abuse In A Loved One And Why Long Term Treatment Is The Best Choice

Are you concerned that a loved one may have become addicted to methamphetamine? “Meth” has been called “the most dangerous drug on Earth,” and for good reason. It’s easy to find this street drug can be made from a few basic household products. Once someone becomes addicted, they will not be able to stop using on their own and will need professional help at a long term addiction treatment program for the best chance to become clean and sober.

Meth comes in two forms; crystal and powder. “Crystal meth” is a crystallized chunk or rock that can be smoked or heated and injected. Powdered meth, also known as “speed” is less potent than the crystal variety. It is a white, bitter-tasting powder that can be smoked, eaten, snorted, dissolved in a liquid or injected.

How Does Meth Addiction Happen?

When your loved one uses meth, it causes their brain to release a massive amount of the neurotransmitter dopamine. This is why the pleasurable experience of the drug lasts for several hours. With repeated use, meth actually depletes the dopamine in the brain. One reason a person becomes addicted to the drug is because they no longer possess the naturally occurring neurotransmitter and cannot experience pleasure on their own.

Long Term Rehab: How Much Time Is Enough?

You may have read news reports of celebrities checking into facilities for a short-term treatment program of 28 day or so, and concluded that they have received all the care that they need to deal with a substance abuse issue. While we don’t know why a person chooses a particular treatment model, in some cases the decision to choose short-term rehab may be partially motivated by scheduling considerations or other factors.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) describes addiction as a “complex illness.” It is a brain disease that affects the circuits controlling motivation, reward, learning, memory, and the ability to control behavior. We know that people affected by addiction will continue to drink or do drugs, even when faced with negative consequences of their actions.

Since addiction is a chronic disease, simply getting someone to stop drinking or using drugs for a few weeks is not the same thing as treating the underlying factors and completing a comprehensive treatment program. The NIDA recommends long-term rehab for best results.

Long Term Rehab For Addiction

Partial Hospitalization Program

A 28-day partial hospitalization program (PHP) for drug and alcohol abuse, such as the one offered by New Beginnings Recovery Center, provides clients with addiction education, group and individual therapy. It also gives them a foundation for further treatment with us, which will allow them to address the many underlying issues that led to their addiction.

Intensive Outpatient Program

Once the 28-day PHP has been completed, clients can move into a 60 or 90-day intensive outpatient treatment option. This level of care involves clients living in our sober housing facilities. They receive 10 hours of group therapy and individual counseling sessions per week. In addition to these services, they also attend a 12-step program and take steps to obtain employment and work on their life skills.

Long Term Rehab Is The Best Chance At Lifelong Sobriety

When an addiction is severe or has been established over several years, it is unrealistic to expect that a person will be able to make a major lifestyle change and deal with the underlying issues within a short time. Long term rehab gives a client the best chance of reaching his or her goal of being able to maintain sobriety after leaving a treatment program.

New Beginnings Recovery Center offers several treatment programs to meet its clients’ specific needs.
