How Sober Living Houses Helps People Move From Treatment To Independent Living

One of the features that New Beginnings Recovery Center offers clients in early recovery is the opportunity to stay in one of our sober living houses. Leaving a treatment program and transitioning to living in the community is a challenging time. Simply moving from one environment to the other without adequate support is not recommended or ideal since it usually doesn’t end in a favorable outcome.

What Is A Sober Living House?

Since drug and alcohol addiction is a chronic illness, a client goes into recovery during the treatment process. This is an ongoing process, as opposed to a person being “cured.” Choosing to go to a sober living house during recovery allows someone to live in a safe supportive environment when they are either trying to get back to work or school.

During the first few months that a client leaves treatment, he or she is particularly at risk for a relapse, since using the tools to manage stressors of everyday life learned during the program are still new. Having some extra support during the first several months after leaving treatment will greatly benefit someone making this transition.

How A Sober Living Home Works

Sober living gives clients a place where they can continue to focus on their recovery and have more independence than in a residential treatment program. They offer an affordable place to stay where residents must remain drug-and-alcohol free while working on their individual recovery plans.

At New Beginnings Recovery Center, sober living house residents must commit to staying at Foundations Sober Living (our sober living homes) for at least six months, attend a 12-step program under the guidance of a sponsor, and follow house rules, including abiding by specific curfews. They must also agree to do one of the following for the duration of their stay:

  • Obtain employment
  • Go to school
  • Participate in volunteer work
  • Go to an outpatient therapy program

Sober living homes are fully furnished and the cost of the stay in these facilities includes utilities. Residents buy and cook their own food. A resident manager lives onsite to provide assistance and oversee the day-to-day operations of the house. All residents know that random drug and alcohol tests will be conducted, and that they are required to pass in order to continue their stay.

Beyond Detox: The Benefits Of Long Term Addiction Treatment

Benefits Of Long Term Addiction Treatment | Outpatient Program FLWhile one of the most important steps in the process of recovery is the process of detoxing your body, there is much more that goes into a full addiction recovery. Depending on how long you have been dealing with your addictions will determine how in-depth and how long you will need to undergo treatment. While some people may be able to complete a short treatment program and live a sober life, others may require the use of long term addiction treatment. These treatment programs include sober living facilities as well as ongoing counseling sessions.

Going Home Isn’t The End Of Your Addiction Treatment

Completing the outpatient program is not the end of your treatment. We know that many patients need ongoing treatment to fully overcome their addictions. Once you have completed the outpatient detox program, you will return home to complete our intensive outpatient program in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. The goal of this program is to teach you to avoid your triggers while living in your natural environment. While you will be able to return home at the end of the day, most of your day will be spent in counseling and therapy sessions.

Not Ready To Return Home? Sober Living Is For You

If you are one of the many people who have suffered from long term addictions, you may not be ready to return home at the end of a traditional treatment program. We understand that not everyone is able to face the temptations of the outside world without returning to old ways. If you are afraid you will not be able to resist this temptation, you can move into a sober living house until you feel ready to return home.

Continuing Recovery In Long Term Addiction Treatment

Addiction is a chronic disease that will need to be battled for the long term. While you may be able to detox and overcome the addiction with our outpatient treatment programs, you may still find the need for long term addiction treatment sessions. You may choose to see a private counselor, join a local recovery group, or visit us for routine counseling. Regardless of the option you choose, it is important that you have a support group surrounding you to aid in your continued sobriety.

Tips And Tricks To Stay Sober During The Holidays

Maintaining sobriety can be especially difficult during the holiday season. Office parties, family gatherings and other social occasions make it hard on those in early recovery. Thoughts of holiday fun in previous years are often associated with celebratory drinking or drug use.

Though the idea of a sober holiday season can prove difficult to get your head around, especially when others tend to indulge, there are ways to stay sober and happy throughout the festivities.

Tips And Tricks To Stay Sober

  • Plan out each day of the holiday season. Spend your time with family and friends who are supportive of your sobriety and who are non-users.
  • Tips And Tricks To Stay Sober During The Holidays | Long-Term SobrietyLocate a nearby meeting. Many support groups like AA and NA hold special meetings throughout the holiday season to share their hope, strength and experience. Search online for a list of area meetings and add them to your daily routine.
  • Get support from friends and family members. Those who are truly supportive of your sobriety will be happy to help you through the holiday season.  Plan a sober activity with them during the holidays. Or have them over to your place and treat them!
  • Exercise. Routine exercise will not only keep you fit throughout the season, but keep you focused and motivated on your recovery.
  • Avoid the regular hangouts. There is absolutely no reason to check in on your former friends or establishments. You know where those roads lead… try something new! Try a non-alcohol holiday party.
  • Be grateful. The easiest cure for the holiday blues is counting your blessings each and every day. Whenever you feel negativity coming on, simply jot down 5 things you are grateful for!
  • Volunteer. No matter how down you feel, there are always people in the community who are less fortunate than you. Help yourself by helping the needy this holiday season.
  • Don’t deny your healthy cravings and emotions. If you get hungry, eat. If you get angry, breathe deep and talk it out. If you get lonely, call a friend or attend a local meeting. If you get tired, treat yourself to a nap. The better you feel, the less likely you will be to resort to old habits.
  • Write yourself a letter. Getting your ideas out on paper is powerful exercise! Jot down a list of events and activities that will aid in your quest to enjoy a happy, healthy and sober festive season.
  • Live day by day. Be in the moment, living one day at a time. The past and future are neither here, nor there! Live today. Enjoy today. Celebrate today!
